J & B MET DAY 2016

Welcome to this year’s J&B Met official form guide of 2016.

A slightly shorter list of selections and comments for this year’s brochure. It is usually tough to find a winner but this year they have certainly not made it any easier with all the fillies handicap races. One certainly won’t be able to party the night before and will have to have one’s head screwed on straight to back any winners this year. The Met looks a particularly intriguing event.

From a personal view, we have had a stuttering season but the horses seem to be coming well now. We are a little short of quality in the middle realms but our top horses are all back in from their holidays on the farms after their campaigns round the country. I am looking forward to a strong end of season finish.

I wish everyone a pleasant Met day and hopefully a profitable one, although that might come as a major surprise to all. Remember: the comments and tips that follow are only a guide. I managed to frighten the living daylights out of myself when studying the computer form and trying to find winners. I only hope you can do better.

Best Wishes

Joey

RACE 1: WELCOME TO THE J&B MET 2016 MR77 HANDICAP: 1200M

An intriguing event. What makes it even more intriguing is the fact that we have to get up that much earlier to have enough time to work the horses and then beat the traffic to get to the course on time to watch the first race.

It looks to be an extremely open race. I have no definite idea what can win this as there are about eight of them that can do the job. If I have to pick, then 2) Fire Master, with Strydom up, will beat another Snaith horse in 9) Cuban Emerald. 5) Oriental Tiger is off a decent mark and can fill the third place. This is really a tough opening event.

RACE 2: RACING: IT’S A RUSH PUBLIC VILLAGE FM87 HANDICAP: 2000M

A ten furlong handicap for fillies and mares off a relatively low rating: it goes from bad to worse. Another very tough race and it is difficult to look past 2) Star Express. She has a good draw and top rider. The only question mark is whether she will get the trip but she is by Silvano out of a Doowaley mare and there is no reason why she would not. She will certainly have the speed. The other Snaith horse 5) Secret Seven looks to have all the right answers with Khumalo in the irons. 3) Morning Light looked a very nice filly early on in her career and I think these three will be fighting out the finish. Grant van Niekerk is in top form and he has the ride on 8) Romagna but she is a little out at the handicap which will make it tough for her.

RACE 3: SW SECURITY FM 86 HANDICAP: 1000M

A fillies event over five furlongs. These have to be the toughest races on the card and this race makes the 2000m Fillies Handicap look a doddle. They really do not want people to have any money left for the main race. I cannot surely again go for a Snaith horse but 1) Petala certainly looks to have the form and the consistency. Louis Goosen travelled down with 3) A Million Dreams and must surely rate her extremely highly. 6) Ntombe, the Australian filly, must surely be in with a chance.

However, it is tough to look past 4) Dixie Express. She has won four on the bounce, the last two with an apprentice up, and still seems off an extremely reasonable mark. 8) Hoist The Mast, having just won a Maiden last time out after moderate form, has come in quite high here. The two Adam Marcus horses 10) Tumbles and 12) Sweetchild O Mine don’t look to be anything out of the ordinary, although one never knows.

So I am going to stay with 4) Dixie Express, who looks well on the up, to beat another Snaith runner 1) Petala with 3) A Million Dreams filling the trifecta.

RACE 4: THE SUN INTERNATIONAL SUMMER JUVENILE STAKES (LISTED) 1000M

Moving onto the Juvenile Stakes and it does not get easier. 1) Sergeant Hardy looked like he had been up and down the track more times than Dean Diederick’s lawn mower when he won first time out. He ran straight as a dye and was extremely impressive. However, he allegedly has a breathing problem so looks tough to choose. 2) Var Ahead also seemed to know what to do first time out and cruised home. 3) Felicity Flyer has fair form. 8) Cloth of Cloud had his first run last week Saturday. He was heavily backed and won as he liked.

The balance of the field is either unraced or have little bits and bobs of form and seem to be held here. I would give 5) Mount Keith a small chance but I am not sure the pilot knows how long five furlongs is.

I have no confident selection for this race and would keep an eye on the betting. Snaith seems to have it covered with his early juveniles but the Tarry trained 8) Cloth of Cloud is going to be a tough contender if he handles racing back to back. If pushed for a selection, I would go as follows:

RACE 5: CITY OF CAPE TOWN FM82 HANDICAP: 1400M

Phumelela Racing must really hate their betting customers as this is yet another Fillies race. I will confidently tip 7) Chevauchee. She is a major runner and is a smashing filly. While I think seven furlongs might well be her minimum, if she runs well from the sixteen draw, she is a good thing.

I also like our filly 19) Grey Light but at the moment she is third reserve and does not look to be getting a run. 15) Targaryan, with a twelve draw and ridden by Donovan Dillon, looks to have a chance. Our own 11) Princess Salme might have a small chance and be a trifecta horse, especially if we have some rain. 10) Provenance, with a good draw and Delpech up, has decent form.

Justin Snaith could well go through the card with his runners as 3) Qing, another Snaith runner with Strydom up, also looks to be a massive runner. It is tough to give the first three home in this race as my number one selection 7) Chevauchee might well end up not running from that draw. We will just have to wait and see but for now my selections are:

7) Chevauchee 1) School Run
3) Qing 3) Qing

RACE 6: RACING ASSOCIATION MR96 HANDICAP: 1200M

I know I am sounding like a door creaking in the wind but this is another tough one in which to find a winner. The fields are big and who knows which side of the course the jockeys decide to use on the day. There is no difference in the going at Kenilworth between the one draw and the eighteen draw. It all depends on which side the pace is. If you go where there is no pace on, you will have a problem.

5) Zubbadubbadoo still looks to be off a ridiculously good mark. There are charity horses and then there are charity horses and this one is most certainly the charity horse! The handicapper has certainly been extremely charitable towards him. He has well known leg problems which I did not realize the handicapper took into account. If moving well, he can certainly win this race.

Dennis Drier has had a moderate season by his standards and 7) Sea Fever could well be the business here although Argonaut would not be my first choice of sire. 4) Door of Deception is another that seems to have escaped the handicapper’s attention for a rather long time. If one looks for a young colt that is improving then 13) Fifty Cents could well be the right one.

I am going for 13) Fifty Cents to beat the much talked about 5) Zubbadubbadoo with 7) Sea Fever running on well for third.

RACE 7: BETTING WORLD CAPE FLYING CHAMPIONSHIP (WFA) (GRADE 1) 1000M

Here we have our own 3) Brutal Force and I am going to tip him to win. I train him, I like him and nothing would give me greater pleasure than to see him get his head in front. It is disappointing not to have Anton up but he has chosen 5) Guiness who did not run badly first time up after a break.

9) Triptique is a big danger but anything can win this. 8) Copper Parade is probably at his best over the five furlong so there is no reason he cannot be a force to be reckoned with. 14) Fly By Night is always a big runner and 13) Carry On Alice does not know how to run a bad race. She was a little disappointing, by her own standards, last time out. That run was only two weeks ago and she had a tough race. Can that make the difference between winning and losing?

I would not have thought that 7) Daring Dave was quite good enough and 4) Gulf Storm is probably just a bit better than a handicapper, although a decent one. We all know 2) Tevez can win races like this and 1) Trip Tease has not come down for the holiday and has the master, Strydom, in the irons.

I am going to stick with 3) Brutal Force to beat 9) Triptique and 1) Trip Tease.

RACE 8: J&B MET (GRADE 1) 2000M

The one we are all here for. It is a case of the old and established stars taking on the up and coming ones. It looks to be a thrilling event.

1) Futura has maybe not been quite at his best since switching trainers and I am sure Justin will freely admit that. Bernard is riding and he has a good draw so has to be tough to beat but don’t forget that this year he is racing with penalties. 2) Captain America never quite got ten furlongs at three years but since gelding has become a different horse. I still think the extra four hundred metres is going to be beyond him but he is probably the most under rated horse in training and with his decent draw will be giving of his best. 3) Legislate has had a difficult preparation but ran a super second in the Queen’s Plate and has the master, Pierre Strydom, up. He has a good draw here and his form and record speaks for itself. 4) Master Sabina won the Summer Cup and received a Grade 1 penalty for that. It will make it tough for him here.

5) Legal Eagle has not put a foot wrong since winning the SA Derby and looks far better over ten furlongs than he seems over a mile. A great draw of three and Anton up puts everything in his favour. His victory in the Queen’s Plate was scintillating.

6) Paterfamilias had everything go his way in the Premier’s and a draw of thirteen looks to be a tricky ask for him. 7) Gold Onyx has a fifteen draw and he is almost old enough to claim his old age pension. It will be tough for him. 8) Punta Arenas does not seem to be quite the same horse as he was in Durban last year. 9) Helderberg Blue is well drawn and could just run a big race and into the money.

I have no idea why our own 10) King Of Pain ran so disappointingly last time. He is more than capable of giving his best and earning us a place cheque or even better if he puts his mind to it. On his last run, though, I will be hoping for a good place chance.

11) Deo Juvente is a scratching and will take no part. 12) Mac De Lago is another who is just off the best of them but has a strong place chance. 13) Krambambuli and 14) Light The Lights do not look quite good enough. 15) Smart Call’s form is spotless and she is a huge runner here. The question is whether Marwing will make the trip down having been injured and off with a bad back. This horse is a huge runner but who rides is a huge question mark.

To sum up I am going to go with 5) Legal Eagle to beat 15) Smart Call and 1) Futura to fill the third place. However, in my dream race, 10) King of Pain will win it.

RACE 9: J&B URBAN HONEY STAYERS (GRADE 2): 2800M

A sticky race. We ran second in it last year with 3) Coltrane. He had a great first run back, finishing a credible third under a big weight to Current Event. He is doing very well and looks to be fairly well in here. 1) Kingston Mines is his old adversary and cannot be ignored, along with 2) Hot Ticket.

4) Crown of Gold has travelled down from PE. I won a Gold Cup in PE with this horse and his current trainer, Tara Laing, has done exceptionally well with him. 5) Solid Speed is an interesting entrant and was last year’s handicapped ‘good thing” in most of the staying races.

7) Desert Swirl has been good enough to run in the Listed and Grade 3 races but this is a whole different ball game. 9) Masterly has good PE form. 10) Royal Dreamer does not look quite good enough and being by Rebel King surely cannot get two miles? 11) My World should have a big chance but the conditions do not really suit him, although he is a Derby winner. He is also probably better in the soft.

14) Pine Princess is the class filly in the race and off her weight looks to be the handicap good thing. 15) Gallica Rose has had two tough asks but this race looks to be more her game and she cannot be ignored off a good draw.

I am going to go with 14) Pine Princess to beat 15) Gallica Rose, followed by 3) Coltrane and 1) Kingston Mines.

RACE 10: ITSARUSH.CO.ZA FM72 HANDICAP: 1600M

Yet another fillies and mares race! We have our own 1) Supercilious in this. She won extremely well last time but received a big seven pound penalty for that effort. She is more than useful on her day and cannot be ignored. She has a tricky draw of ten but Anton is in the irons. It is a tough race and there are a number of horses off decent handicap marks that look to be improving three year olds.

9) Katies Jay won really well after running wide the whole way and she could well win a race like this. She is well rated and I am going to give her the nod against numerous others.

RACE 11: CAPE TOWN’S PRAWN FESTIVAL 20th FEBRUARY MR80 HANDICAP: 1600M

1) Vilakazi has won two in a row and is a really nice Visionaire. He looks cherry ripe for this race but does have a tricky nine draw. Our own 8) Mr Wise Guy, another Visionaire, has Anton Marcus up. I cannot wait to run this fellow over ten furlongs but I am giving him this one more run over the mile first. He won extremely well and easily with Donovan up and a repeat of that effort could see him win again. 4) Our Icon has always had a big reputation along with 6) Speed Limit, although this one comes from a wide draw.

12) Prince of Wales is another off a very good mark, having won two out of five starts. He races from a good draw of three and has Strydom up. 14) Mutzi, by Var out of an Argentinian mare, stayed well over the mile last time out. With a merit rating of 78, he looks hard to oppose.

An extremely tough handicap, says the stuck record once again but I am going to be loyal and stick with 8) Mr Wise Guy from 12) Prince of Wales, 1) Vilakazi and 14) Mutzi.

RACE 12: JOIN US FOR THE J&B MET AFTER PARTY MR95 HANDICAP: 1600M

Finally, the deadly race 12, another handicap over a mile but this time a race with higher rated horses.

Our own 13) Catkin is more than capable on the day but I have no idea who will ride if Marwing does not make the trip down. At this time of writing, it is looking doubtful we will see him here. 7) True Master had a big reputation here many years ago and looks to have dropped nicely in the ratings but has a tricky draw to overcome. 9) Mambo Mime has a tricky draw to overcome but has good, constistent form. 14) Baritone, a three year old son of Trippi with Khumalo in the irons, has a good draw. His Guineas run to Noah From Goa was tops and he looks the one to beat.

In this final race of the day I am going with 14) Baritone to beat 7) True Master from 9) Mambo Mime and pray that 13) Catkin starts finding his very best form.
